Milwaukee Brewers vs Los Angeles Dodgers: The Matchup Changes Once the Starters Leave
The most important question in Milwaukee’s visit to Los Angeles is not which starter owns the better season ERA. Shane Drohan has been more stable across the full season, but Roki Sasaki enters with noticeably better recent form. Once the game reaches the bullpen, however, the advantage shifts toward Milwaukee.
That makes Sasaki’s workload the hinge point of the matchup. If he gives Los Angeles six effective innings, the Dodgers can minimize their most vulnerable area. If he exits early, Milwaukee’s fresher relief corps can change the balance of the game.

Competition / Round: 2026 MLB Regular Season

Sasaki Is Pitching Better Than His Season ERA Suggests
Sasaki carries a 4.54 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 106 strikeouts in 105 innings for the season.
Those numbers do not immediately suggest a major starting-pitcher advantage. His last five outings tell a different story: 30 innings, a 2.40 ERA and 31 strikeouts.
His four-seam fastball is averaging 97.9 mph and accounts for 42.2% of his pitches. He pairs it primarily with a 90.2 mph splitter and an 86.6 mph slider.
When the fastball stays at the top of the zone, hitters have to make an early decision against elite velocity. That makes the splitter much more difficult to identify before it drops underneath the barrel.
The remaining concern is command. A 9.0% walk rate can create stressful innings, and Sasaki becomes far easier to attack when he is forced to bring his fastball back toward the center of the plate.
Drohan Offers More Season-Long Stability
Drohan enters at 6-4 with a 3.87 ERA, with underlying numbers that support much of that performance. His xERA is 3.52 and his FIP sits at 3.34.
His arsenal is built around variety rather than one dominant weapon:
- Four-seam fastball: 29.1%, 94.8 mph
- Sinker: 20.3%, 94.7 mph
- Slider: 20.2%, 86.1 mph
- Curveball: 13.7%
- Cutter: 11.8%
That distribution makes him difficult to sit on during the first trip through the order.
The issue against the Dodgers comes later. Los Angeles has multiple hitters capable of adjusting between at-bats, and a sinker left in the middle third of the zone becomes dangerous against the heart of this lineup.
Drohan’s biggest challenge may therefore be surviving the second and third meetings with Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Max Muncy without having to narrow his pitch mix.
Los Angeles Has the Better Offensive Ceiling
The season-level offensive difference is not huge, but it favors the Dodgers.
Milwaukee: .729 OPS, 4.9 runs per game
Los Angeles: .765 OPS, 5.0 runs per game
Los Angeles also has a more imposing concentration of power in the middle of the order.
The fact that Drohan is left-handed does not automatically create a favorable matchup against a Dodgers lineup with prominent left-handed bats. The more relevant issue is how those hitters match his fastball, slider and cutter combination.
Ohtani, Freeman and Muncy give Los Angeles several ways to punish a mistake once Drohan begins working deeper into the game.
Milwaukee’s best path against Sasaki runs through hitters such as Jackson Chourio and Garrett Mitchell being able to stay on the high fastball without expanding against the splitter below the zone.
Milwaukee’s Best Edge Arrives in the Bullpen
This is the strongest counterweight to the Dodgers’ starting-pitcher and offensive advantages.
Milwaukee enters with most of its important relievers positioned to work. Trevor Megill, DL Hall and Abner Uribe give the Brewers multiple late-inning options.
Los Angeles has fewer fully rested choices. Tanner Scott and Edwin Díaz are in relatively comfortable spots, but several other relievers have recent workloads that may require management.
That distinction matters most if Sasaki fails to reach the sixth inning.
A six-inning Sasaki start would allow the Dodgers to streamline their relief plan. A four- or five-inning start would force Los Angeles into the part of the roster where Milwaukee owns the clearer game-day advantage.
Three Variables That Can Swing the Game
1. Sasaki’s fastball location
The velocity is not in question. The key is whether it stays above the barrel. Walks or missed locations can turn his biggest weapon into Milwaukee’s best opportunity.
2. Drohan’s second and third trips through the order
His diverse pitch mix can be effective early. The pressure rises when Los Angeles hitters have already seen each shape once or twice.
3. How early the bullpens are needed
A long start favors the Dodgers’ overall structure. An early bullpen game favors Milwaukee.
Most Likely Game Script
The most natural first half of the game is relatively tight.
Sasaki’s velocity and splitter should limit Milwaukee’s ability to string together hard contact, while Drohan’s variety can keep Los Angeles from immediately locking into one pitch family.
The matchup begins to tilt when the Dodgers see Drohan for the second and third time.
If Ohtani, Freeman and Muncy create traffic between the fourth and sixth innings, Los Angeles has the best chance to build a modest lead.
Sasaki reaching roughly six innings would then allow the Dodgers to shorten the relief portion of the game.
The primary scoring range is Milwaukee 3-5, Los Angeles 4-6.
How Milwaukee Can Flip It
The cleanest Brewers path begins with Sasaki losing the strike zone.
Early walks force him into more fastball counts. If Milwaukee converts one of those fastballs into extra-base damage, his pitch count can rise quickly.
An exit before the sixth inning exposes Los Angeles to a longer bullpen sequence.
If Drohan reaches the middle innings with the game close, Milwaukee can then hand the ball to the fresher relief unit and reverse the late-game advantage.
That counter-scenario produces a projected range of Milwaukee 4-6, Los Angeles 2-4.
Analyst Verdict
Drohan has been the steadier pitcher over the full season, and Milwaukee owns the better bullpen-availability picture.
The Dodgers, however, have the more favorable combination of recent starting-pitcher form, home field and offensive upside.
Sasaki’s recent 30-inning stretch is the key difference from what his season ERA alone would suggest.
This is not a matchup in which Los Angeles owns every phase. The Dodgers’ edge narrows sharply if Sasaki exits early.
With the current structure intact, the MASTER assessment remains Los Angeles Dodgers slight advantage.
